Experiment 02

Niblet

The Question

Remember those old desktop pets from the 90s? The ones that would walk across your screen, knock things over, and generally make you smile during boring computer tasks?

What if we brought that joy to your phone—but made it actually delightful? Not a productivity tool. Not solving any real problem. Just a little fish that makes you happy.

The Itch

I spend a lot of time staring at screens. Most of that time is productive, focused, serious. But somewhere along the way, screens stopped being fun.

What if the silliest possible thing I could build was also the most joyful?

No AI. No automation. No productivity gains. Just a fish named Niblet who wants your attention.

The Discovery

Niblet started as a weekend project built entirely with Claude Code. An iOS app with a fish that responds to your touch. But then the personality emerged.

Niblet begs for food. Niblet chases laser pointers with manic energy. Niblet gets bored if you ignore them. Niblet has opinions about the time of day.

People started sending screenshots of Niblet to their friends. "Look at this ridiculous fish." And somehow, that made the whole experiment worth it.

Say hello to Niblet

Fair warning: Niblet is needy, easily distracted, and entirely pointless. That's the whole point.

Meet Niblet
For the curious: how it works

Niblet is a native iOS app, built entirely with Claude Code:

  • Swift and SwiftUI for smooth, native animations
  • Particle effects and custom lighting for atmosphere
  • Simple state machine for moods and behaviours
  • Touch tracking and gesture detection for interaction
